Removal of online access to the archive

We have just completed a new upload of documents relating to Leusdon Church and various legal documents regarding properties in the parish to the History Group Archive.
April 7th 2020: Items relating to the Leusdon Church and various Widecombe properties have been added to the Search and Display page.
The items that relate to Leusdon Church can be viewed by using the search terms 'leusdon' and 'church' against the History Group archive, or via this link. The new additions all have a catalogue number in the range H402 - H445.
New Publication Based on the Archives!
November 27th 2019: A new book that tells the story of Welfare in Widecombe between 1700-1900 , based largely on these archives, is shortly to be published.
The book is extensively illustrated with documents from the archives, which are almost all included with transcriptions. Additional resources for the book, including new material that might arise from time to time, are available here.
We have just added numerous old documents concerning the origins of the Rugglestone Inn to the History Group Archive.
October 30th 2017: Items relating to the Rugglestone Inn have been added to the Search and Display page.
These items relate to the Rugglestone Inn and can be viewed by using the search term 'rugglestone' against the History Group archive, or via this link The new additions all have a catalogue number beginning with 'M', indicating they have been loaned to the History Group for the purposes of digitising.
We are finally starting to upload more items to the History Group Archive and the Main Parish Archive.
October 18th 2017: Further items have been added to the Search and Display page.
The first items to be uploaded in this phase are the pages from the Leusdon Burials Register from 1863-1918 (Catalogue Number C005).
As with the baptisms, all the names have been transcribed and the Burial Book pages scanned, so the burials are searchable in the same way as other items in the archive and will be picked up as part of the general search facilities, including name searches.
Another set of items from the History Group Archive are now live on the Search and Display page.
September 21st 2016: Further items can now be viewed on the Search and Display page.
These new items include various items relating to the sale and lease of the Wooder Estate, items concerning Leusdon School, items relating to the Widecombe Charities and various estate sales.
Sifting and sorting through the bundles of items that we are entrusted with is a time-consuming and often difficult task. All items have to be read, sorted and indexed before they can be scanned and catalogued. Then everything is carefully checked before being published, filed and/or returned to the owners.
A further set of items from the History Group Archive are now live on the Search and Display page.
April 25th 2016: Further items can now be viewed on the Search and Display page.
These new items include documents relating to the agreement between the tithe commissioners and the landowners regarding the tithe apportionments as well as some local estate sale documents, Widecombe Fair Programmes and other miscellaneous items.
Leusdon Baptisms are now live on the Search and Display page.
April 9th 2016: Leusdon Baptisms covering 1863 (when the church was consecrated) up to April 1916 can now be viewed on the Search and Display page under Catalogue Number C004.
All the names have been transcribed and the Baptism Book pages scanned, so the baptisms are searchable in the same way as other items in the archive and will be picked up as part of the general search facilities, including name searches.
Website Improvement: Your search terms are now highlighted when viewing 'More Details' from the Search and Display page.
November 13th 2015: Your search terms are highlighted when viewing 'More Details' from the Search and Display page.
This highlights matching search terms in the displayed text. There is a yellow highlight for your entered search terms and a lime highlight for matches from the list of synonyms. Synonyms occur where we have recorded various spellings for common local placenames and surnames such as Bonehill and Bunhill.
The first phase of the History Group Archive is now live.
October 22nd 2015: History Group Archive - first assets now live.
We have been working over the past twelve months to digitise and catalogue the History Group Archive. This is a large and therefore ongoing project, but we have made some good progress and are now able to put the first of these assets online. All being well another batch will follow soon.
Website Improvement: Addition of a specific Name Search on the Search and Display page.
February 11th 2015: You can now do a specific Name Search on the Search and Display page.
This searches for the first and last name supplied in the chosen collection and, unlike the basic search, these two names must be in association, which means that they must occur together in the text being searched. You can also now specify an advanced search to be a name search as well.
New transcript: 1733 Lease of Ladymeadow
January 9th 2015: We have uploaded the transcript of the Lease of Ladymeadow from 1733 (Catalogue Reference: A042).
This transcript is available from the detailed document viewing page for A042 accessible from the Search and Display page. It appears as a PDF document that can be downloaded or viewed as required.
Website Improvement: Inclusion of synonym names in basic search
January 9th 2015: When you do a basic search and include a name that is in the synonym list it will automatically search for all the synonyms as well.
Using the Basic Search on the Search and Display page, when you enter a name that is present in the synonym list (viewable under the Advanced Search options), the system will automatically include all the synoymous names in the search.
Website Improvement: Provision of Combined Collection Search
October 4th 2014: You can now search through all collections with a single search.
We have added a 'Combined' collection option to the list of collections on the Search and Display page. If you choose this option then all collections are combined together to provide a single database to search against with your desired search criteria.
Website Improvement: Provision of Transcripts
September 18th 2014: We now have the facility to add transcripts to any document.
Transcripts can now be added for any document. These are included in the search facilities and are available in PDF format to view and download. Currently, transcripts are available for A060.001 (Deed of the Customs - our earliest document 1586) and A060.002 (List of tenements from which Churchwardens are drawn). More transcripts will be added soon.
Baptisms 1894-1913 Live plus list of offline items
March 1st 2014: Widecombe Parish Baptisms for 1894-1913 are now live plus list of items that are being kept offline for now.
Baptism records over 100 years old (1894-1913) are now online. We have also made available the list of the archive items that will NOT be online for the foreseeable future.
Various New Items Live
December 10th 2013: Widecombe School & Newton Abbot Union Accounts 1800s are now live.
Various new items uploaded, including Charity Papers, Newton Abbot Union (Overseers' Accounts) and Widecombe School Papers from the 1800s. Also some Robert Dymond transcripts of some old Widecombe Documents.
Highways Maintenance Accounts Live
November 30th 2013: Highways Accounts are now live.
All checking now completed on the Highways Accounts. Small number of additional indentures also live.

September 16th 2013: Remaining Overseers Accounts & Indentures live.
All checking now completed on the remaining Indentures. Also on the Overseers' Accounts.
First Overseers Accounts Live!
September 6th 2013: Overseers Accounts 1700-1771 now live.
We are currently checking the Overseers' and Churchwardens' Accounts. As we finish they will be put live.
First Indentures Live!
August 30th 2013: 400 Indentures now live.
We are currently checking the indenture records, As we have completed two-thirds of the checking we thought we would put the checked ones live, plus the only surviving Register of Indentures covering 1802-1839.

August 21st 2013: The Widecombe Archive launches its new website!!!
The Widecombe Archive is pleased to announce that its new website launched on August 21st 2013. We have two collections available with images: Widecombe Churchyard Headstones and the Tithe Apportionments.
