Welcome to the Widecombe Digital Archive
This is the home of the digital version of Widecombe's community, heritage & cultural assets. The Widecombe Digitising Project is a project of the Widecombe History Group that started in 2011 and is on-going. Periodically, as and when new assets are digitised, they will be added to this site.
This site provides search and display facilities for all the assets that we are able to put online.
It is divided into a number of collections and the Collections Page lists those currently available.
Quick Start - Name Search - All Collections
Another good way to get started is to visit the Examples page to get familiar with what is online and how to search for it.
Or, just enjoy looking around!
New Book Launched that Celebrates the Archive
A new, extensively illustrated, book has been published that uses the Widecombe Digital Archive and other local archives to tell the story of the poor of Widecombe parish, and the general provision of local welfare assistance during the period 1700-1900.
This is obviously long before the existence of the present day welfare state and the extent of the help provided is striking and, at times, quite surprising, and shows a strong degree of care and concern for the less fortunate members of society.
