This is the home of the digital version of Widecombe's community, heritage & cultural assets. The Widecombe Digitising Project is a project of the Widecombe History Group that started in 2011. Periodically, as and when new assets are digitised, they will be added to this site.

The project is divided into a number of collections and the Collections Page lists those currently available.

Book Launched that Celebrates the Archive

An extensively illustrated book has been published that uses the Widecombe Digital Archive and other local archives to tell the story of the poor of Widecombe parish, and the general provision of local welfare assistance during the period 1700-1900.

This is obviously long before the existence of the present day welfare state and the extent of the help provided is striking and, at times, quite surprising, and shows a strong degree of care and concern for the less fortunate members of society.

More information can be found here, including details of how you can buy your own copy of the printed book or the eBook.
